When an agent is new to working undercover, it can be difficult to not get lost in the role. “Undercover agents have to learn to compartmentalize their emotions, which takes a little practice. Those journals were a big part of formulating the novel’s characters, as were her personal experiences undercover. I was afraid the targets might find the journal, so I kept it hidden in the ceiling panels of my undercover apartment,” says Ridenour.

I started keeping a journal when I began working undercover. “She encouraged me to keep a journal when I became an FBI Agent. For example, I was not allowed to use a photo of the FBI seal on the cover,” Ridenour says. “I was held to a little different standard because of my affiliation with the FBI. The whole book discussed below in this Huffington Post Puff Piece is based on a lie this so-called FBI agent never infiltrated the ALF, but posed as an animal rights campaigner for a year or two before being called out by activists.
